The mountain village of Makrinitsa is situated high above Volos where its houses appear to hang like ornaments on the green mountainside. The village square with its centuries old plane trees offers a panoramic view over Volos and the Pagasitikos Gulf.
The village is on a number of levels at altitudes from 350mts to 700mts. Picturesque cobblestone paths link the various parts of the village.
At the village square is the church of Agios Yiannis Prothromos. On the side of the church is the famous old spring fountain with its sculptured lions heads, which was built in 1809.
